This follows the excellent post by "Why Me" regarding the role of the US Army plays in "nation-building". From a practical standpoint, what is our interest? The misinformed continually cite Japan and Germany as success stories. Yes, we all agree. However, these represent the select few or "outliers". I would argue that in Germany's case, the proximity of wealthy nations surrounding the country that help promote trade played a large role in their success. Further, how do we expect that to work for Iraq? Will Syria, Saudi Arabia, or Iran come to the rescue? Will the institutions of government be sound? I am going to hazard a guess, I don't expect this to be true.

``If we don't experience warming over the next 10 years, it doesn't mean that greenhouse-gas warming is not with us,'' Keenlyside said in an interview. ``There can be natural fluctuations that may mask climate change in the short term.'' Ok, ya that makes all the sense in the world. Let me step aside and let you smart educated scientist take this one, I mean ya’ll are the experts and know what your talking about- yes I conced that Global Warming will want to take a break once in a while and go on vacation.

Will the Right Sit It Out?
But why, when America's mini-mills and steel mills are among the most efficient on earth — in terms of man hours needed to produce a ton of steel — aren't those jobs coming back?
Answer: It is due to the free-trade policies of Bush and McCain, which permit trade rivals to impose value-added taxes of 15 percent to 20 percent on steel imports from the United States while rebating those taxes on steel exports to the United States. We are getting it in the neck coming and going.
An America First trade and tax policy could have U.S. steel mills rising again, while those in Japan, China, Russia and Brazil would be shutting down as uncompetitive in the U.S. market.
But we no longer put America first.

You know, I have to disagree with Mr. Buchanan. Based on a review of the available data, wage and salary disbursements by private industry rose 52% in the period 1998-2007. Further, personal income has risen by 230% in the period 1985-2007.
I would suggest that we need to do more to promote free trade. It is true there are "losers" in the equation of free trade. However, the societal benefits as a whole far outweigh the negative impact on specific individuals.
I do agree with Mr. Buchanan when he states that we need to stop giving out subsidies to the steel industry. We should promote a level playing field for all industries. I do believe that if the government chose to step out of the way, the jobs lost in one industry will be gained in another as we unleash the entrepreneurial spirit of the American public.

What will Al Gore do now??
According to a story over on Newsmax there is a scientist that is saying forget global warming, the new concern is global cooling. Haven't we already been down this road? Have we not already worried about a little ice age a few decades ago? What is the reason for this renewed concern? What is the evidence? Sunspots, or rather the lack thereof. There is a picture that the scientist refers to which shows the sun without any sunspots. Ok....and? Well apparently, there is a correlation between sunspot cycles and the earth's climate. The spaceweather.com website has way more than you probably care about with regard to sunspots and what they mean in relation to weather. I don't want to get off in the weeds on the science of this, mainly because I can't. I'm not a weather guy, the point is we no longer use the term "global warming", it's now referred to as "climate change". Why is that? Because global warming is BS, and this is starting to take hold one small step at a time. Of course, if we can finally discount this myth then there must be some other crisis that we have to deal with. And this may be it, a recycled global crisis from a few decades ago. The shift in the terminology to "climate change" is a hedge, the inconvenient truth bandwagoneers have cleverly placed this "out" so they can keep the "crisis" going. Just think how we could inflate this crisis to include the ramifications of global cooling coupled with the current oil situation. PEOPLE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO AFFORD TO HEAT THEIR HOMES! PEOPLE WILL FREEZE TO DEATH IN THEIR HOMES! Just wait. Please Mr. Chavez won't you donate some more of your Venezualan oil to the poor people of America. Joe Kennedy needs your help to heat their homes.

I'm speechless on this one....

Lincoln-Douglas...Clinton-Obama
Hillary has challenged the Big O to a debate Lincoln-Douglas style. No moderator, just the two of them going at it for ~90 minutes on whatever they want to talk about. Actually, I think that this could be a good thing, I wish that more debates were in this style, we actually may get some substantive dialogue rather than the made for the evening news soundbites that we get with every "debate" that we get nowadays. Actually, this is something that Newt Gingrich has been pushing for a while now. Maybe the challenge to this is how do you package it for television? God forbid something like this goes up against American Idol or Dancing with the Stars, sadly it would get trounced because this is what passes for entertainment now. Newt's solution was rather than broadcast it on tv, he put debates that he had conducted in this style on his website. Those that were interested could go to the site and watch the debate. Further Expansion of the Nanny State
A Fairfax County (Virginia) elementary school has taken serious measures towards maintaining the safety of the kids in which they are charged with day in and day out. No, it does not have anything to do with gun safety on campus. Don't misunderstand that reference, I'm an advocate of the Second Amendment just like my friend the pirate who recently put one of his guns to good use (nice pic). I think that if somebody on campus had actually had a gun (other than the killer) then there would have been fewer people killed, but I'm drifting off topic. Neither does it have anything whatsoever to do with education, which I thought was sort of the point of school. No, there have been much more dangerous issues arise. According to reports, a principal of one of our elementary schools is taking the socialist bull by the horns and has banned the game of tag. Why? Because it has become a game of "intense aggression". Yes tag, as in tag you're it and then you run away. This is the new threat to 6th graders growing up and going to school in Virginia. Actually, and this is the sad thing, we have become a society that is so hung up on regulating everything (TMF will jump on this bandwagon) that we've lost sight of the realities of life.
Forget for just a second that this article is actually regulating playground activities, and we're not talking about drugs, or anything illegal. Life aint always easy, and when things get difficult we learn what we're made of. It's a little thing called "character", and it is not something that happens over night, character develops over a lifetime. And it's challenges, and experiences that are not always fun, as well as how we respond to them, that forms that character. If every little inconvenience that would be encountered during the formative years is banned, what are kids learning? Sometimes you have to skin a knee, and bruise an elbow in order to learn something about yourself. This is a small piece of the ridiculous puzzle that kids are being socially engineered into accepting as the way things ought to be. At some point though, there is going to have to be a harsh reality for these spoiled little brats. We have to understand that we can't regulate ourselves into utopia. The reach of (over)protectionism can only extend so far, eventually it slips through the fingers, and at that point it's too late to cry about unfairness.

HAPPY APRIL 15th!!
As tax day came near, I was inspired by fellow blogger ‘Why Me’ to post a note regarding the aforementioned fair tax. I am a supporter of the fair tax and hope to persuade my 1 reader to join the fair tax coalition. I believe that the fair tax is an equitable approach to taxes. The current system is set up to ensure that a markedly small portion of the population benefit from their ability to understand and manipulate the tax code.
For me, it is a simple thought. Why wouldn’t I want to control where and how my money is spent? Why should I be penalized for saving money to buy a home, a car or for my retirement? Well, in my humble opinion, I should not. Yet again, the tax man took me to task for saving money. I don’t understand. Who came up with this system?
Anyway, if any of our readers get a chance, I recommend your support for the Fair Tax bill circulating in Congress. I believe that it will teach us that greater control of our own destinies will be a benefit to the country. People will be able to determine which course is best for them and the government will have to live with the economic will of the people.
I feel that all of this is important as we approach the upcoming election. We have a choice between two parties:
Tax and Spend
Borrow and Spend
For me, none of the above.

We the People....deserve better
I was watching Larry King a couple of nights ago, something that I routinely do not do, but I watched because he had Jesse Ventura on the show. Ventura has dropped off the map, almost literally, since leaving Minnesota a few years ago, however he is usually good for some laughs so I watched. And was surprised. He said something that seems so natural, and obvious. I guess it was one of those ideas that was so obvious nobody has seen it. Actually the essence of the idea is not new, but the way he articulated it really resonated. He (like me and many others) is absolutely sick of Democrats and Republicans. I used to proudly say, with no hesitation, that I'm a Republican. I don't feel that pride in this party anymore. Now I simply say that I'm conservative, and skirt around party allegiances, hell lately I'm feeling a Libertarian streak that just gets stronger as days go by. I will never be a Democrat, so where does that leave me? A registered Independent? Looks more and more appealing. I'm sick of the two parties, they are both beholden to the special interest groups (SIGs) and the financial backing that they provide. Democrats are owned by Code Pink, and the various other groups, they are legion. But I'm not letting the right side of the aisle off of the hook. Special interest groups are just as ingrained in their pocket books as well. Some of these groups are Bible thumping born-agains that like to dictate morality, others are companies like Blackwater that just want to support the war effort! Maybe the religious SIGs could get together and cast out the Legion of lefty SIGs into one of those barrels of pork that both sides like to fill and toss it into the Potomac. I know, it scares me too when I start making Biblical references, if you don't get it it's from Luke 8:26-33, and Mark 5:1-13. The SIGs are only part of the reason that I'm fed up with these two parties, I would never finish this blog if I elaborated on all of the other things like: increasing size of government, socialist entitlement programs, etc.
Anyway, I'm sick of them all, and the thing that Ventura said as he was voicing his displeasure with them as well was that we as voters should have "none of the above" as an option at the polls. As it stands now, when there is no candidate that you feel supportive of, and you choose not to support them at the polls then it is called voter apathy. But it is not necessarily apathy it's voter disgust, at least that's what it is in my case. So I decided to look into it a little more, and just did a quick search of the term "None of the above". I found some interesting things, the state of Nevada has a choice on their ballots of "None of these candidates", although the way it really works is that the candidate that gets the most votes wins regardless of how many votes None of the above gets so it really means nothing. Ukraine has "against all", now I think that I like that one better. Russia also had "against all" until it was abolished in 2006. The Green Party of California also allowed "none of the above" in its original 1991 bylaws unfortunately the California Secretary of State filed a lawsuit which resulted in the disallowal of none of the above
in Green Party primaries . Why? Because there was an instance in which none of the above actually won. Interesting comparison of Russia and California, huh? Spain, France and Colombia also have similar ballot choices. The Libertarian Parties of various states also have "none of the above" in their bylaws. I also came across a group called Citizens Against Mediocrity in Politics (what a great name, is there anything but mediocrity in politics now?) also known as (CAMP) . This is a group that supports a 28th Amendment to the Constitution that would add "none of the above" to all federal election ballots. You can also purchase clothing that touts witty slogans such as the one that I used for the title of this blog, no I didn't think of it myself, but damn I wish that I had. There was legislation introduced in 2007 in the Massachusetts House of Representatives as well as in the Senate that calls for the option of "None of the above;For a new election". There are several states that have legislation introduced about this, more information can be found here .
For what seemed to me as being a novel idea, there is an undercurrent here that is building. I think that the support that Ron Paul received is evident of that. I think that there is a long way to go before we actually get to vote for none of the above in a presidential election. I think the functional equivalent for now is just staying home (all you apathetic Americans who don't appreciate your right to vote! Wait, what? Voting is NOT a right, it's a PRIVILEGE allowed by the states? Hmm, that's another blog). As I was saying there is a steep mountain to climb for this idea to truly gain ground, but the same is said about the Fairtax, and I am an ardent supporter of that as well. I guess that I just root for the underdog, the REAL underdog. Not the mutts, the strays, and the bitches. You can figure out for yourself whether that was an analogy to the current crop of candidates, and if it is, you get double points if you can accurately match the candidate with the correct comparison. Think of it as Double Jeopardy...because it kinda is!

Sharin' the Love
Yesterday "big oil executives" were asked by two members of Congress to share share their windfall profits with the poor people of this country in order to help them with their heating bills in the winter and the costs that they will incur for transportation this summer. Olympia Snowe (R) of Maine and Jack Reed (D) of Rhode Island now apparently believe that it is the responsibility of private companies to support the poor and underprivileged of America. Windfall, windfall, windfall, forget that the profit margins have not increased, let's demogogue the profits that Hillary wants to take away and help support her socialistic plan for this country. Of course private companies should assist the downtrodden, it takes a village right? This problem has gone far beyond the limitations of government, so now let's put the yoke of government entitlements around the necks of private companies. This kind of idiocy is moving this country into dangerous territory, even more dangerous than we are in now economically. Of course this request was couched as a voluntary program (for now anyway), and the execs responded by saying that they believed that Congressional sponsoring of this handout is more appropriate. Could it be that both are wrong? Wait a minute, doesn't the ever charitable Citgo provide oil at discount prices to poor areas of the country? Come on Hugo, step up the handouts here we got poor people dying on the streets, and starving to death with nowhere to go because they can't afford gasoline. What? Walk? Ride a bike? Is their a government subsidy for that? Well, maybe Exxon will decide to gear up that voluntary program, we should all have a tiger in the tank!

The Punishment Due
Today in a stump speech in Pennsylvania, Obama expounded on his view of abortion. He made the statement that he has two daughters, and he is going to be teaching them morals. He then said that if one of them makes a mistake they should not be punished with a baby! Well this certainly establishes him as the moral authority does it not? Personally, I am pro-choice, but not for the same reason as most pro-choicers or as Barack. I think that this is one of those gray areas that you have to allow for. Incest, rape, instances where the mother's life is jeopardized, etc., in my opinion dictates that abortion should not be outlawed. I certainly would not advocate keeping abortion legalized for use as birth control or when someone, such as one or both of Obama's daughters makes a mistake. In some situations abortions should not be performed, but I have issues with Congress deliberating legislation on this subject.
Back to Obama, he really put his foot in his mouth on this one. Punished with a baby!! So the morality that he will be teaching his daughters is don't take responsibility for your actions. Don't own your "mistakes", learn from them, and then (especially in this example) make something good out of it. There is a great deal of Obama's moral character that can be extrapolated from this idiotic statement, and while the NOW gang and Code Pink may be celebrating this gross irresponsibility, reasonable, intelligent people (which discounts NOW and Code Pink) should be cringeing at the things that continue to come out about this guy. Finally we are starting to get a clearer picture of what goes on in this guy's head, and electing him President of the U.S. is about as irresponsible as his statement. Of course, if he should be elected, voters will actually have to take responsibility for their actions in January '09. There is no abortion or "morning after pill" for elected officials.

Census - What does it really cost?

I really like this quote from the Census article -- "The reality is, we have to do the census, we have to do it well it and Congress will need to fund it," I did a quick look at what the census has cost over the past few cycles. Based on data collected in a GAO report, the Census costs seem to double every cycle.
1990 - $3.3B
2000 - $6.5B
2010 - $11B
How does that work out? The population is projected to increase by about 24% by 2010 from the 1990 number. However, the census costs have increased by 233%.
Where does the money go????

US toll in Iraq reaches 4000
For my libertarian readers:
I wish to discuss an issue that has become a divisive topic in the United States. Over the weekend, our nation mourned the lost of Soldier #4,000. It is a sad day for our nation at any time a citizen is lost. I have said from the beginning, and I will repeat it again, our nation should not be in Iraq.
I agree with the statement by a DoD spokesman following the release of this story, "No casualty is more or less significant than another; each soldier, marine, airman and sailor is equally precious and their loss equally tragic." I hope that our nation recognizes our fault and begins to pay greater respect to those who have been lost. Why is it that when President Ford died, all flags were hung at half-mast, yet, when a soldier dies, there is nothing more than an update of the statistics?
I disagree with Senator McCain, that our policy should remain the same until we can stabilize Iraq. In my opinion, it is time to leave. It is time to discuss foreign policy in the United States. It is time to discuss whether or not our country should pursue interventionist vs. non-interventionist policies. It is time to discuss, what will benefit our nation? A $1 trillion war or a promotion of realpolitik.
Where is the Mr. Kissinger who said, "America doesn't have friends, America only has interests"? What is in our interest in Iraq? Oil? Al Qaeda? Well, oil exports have been weak and Bin Laden is still alive.

The company we keep??
Ran across this story at ABC: Basically throw Imus under the bus, but stay friends with the real racist. This is a little step back in time, but basically the big O was quite emphatic that he would not tolerate any remarks that were offensive to any group of people that came from any person that works for him. I guess that it's a good thing that the good Reverend is not on O's payroll or he'd be looking in the classifieds..yeah right. Of course I don't think that he would have to look for long, I'm sure that the Nation of Islam, or even Libya could find something for him to do.
By the way, I just heard that the church where Rev. Wright spouts racist, anti-American vitriol, (you know, the scriptures?) had an interesting topic for the Easter sermon today. It was not delivered by Rev. Wright, but the topic was how to survive a public lynching! I'm not big on religion, but I have read the Bible from cover to cover. Old Testament and New Testament. From Genesis 1:1 to Revelation. And funny thing is I don't remember reading any passages about Goddamn America, or rich white people keeping blacks down. Maybe that was in the Apocrypha, I haven't gotten around to that yet.

As an update to an earlier post that I made about the IRS' shrewd decision to send a letter to everyone informing us of the "Economic Stimulus Plan", I would like to say that I have received my letter!! Thank you IRS for this information, and to think that it only cost the taxpayers 42 million dollars. Money well spent, congratulations. We are thankful.

Well, I thought that I just might enlighten you:
Are Libertarians liberal or conservative?
Libertarians are neither. Unlike liberals or conservatives, Libertarians advocate a high degree of both personal and economic liberty. For example, Libertarians advocate freedom in economic matters, so we're in favor of lowering taxes, slashing bureaucratic regulation of business, and charitable -- rather than government -- welfare. But Libertarians are also socially tolerant. We won't demand laws or restrictions on other people who we may not agree because of personal actions or lifestyles.
Think of us as a group of people with a "live and let live" mentality and a balanced checkbook.
In a sense, Libertarians “borrow” from both sides to come up with a logical and consistent whole -- but without the exceptions and broken promises of Republican and Democratic politicians. That's why we call ourselves the Party of Principle.
Enumerated Powers Act - Update
The "Enumerated Powers Act" would force Congress to site its Constitutional authority for every law is passes.

“The reason the FairTax people use the inclusive rate of 23% is that it replaces an inclusive tax rate. Currently, income tax is scored as an inclusive tax rate. For example, the 25% tax bracket implies that 25% of gross earnings is tax, leaving the wage earner with 75%. The FairTax people simply want to be consistent in the manner in which the two systems are portrayed. If you inclusively look at your income tax as a percentage of gross earnings, then let’s also look at the FairTax as a percentage of gross spending. Hence the $30 is 23% of the gross amount spent.”

Thanks to Why Me for the heads up on the Colbert Report story. Earlier in the day, I was flipping through my new copy of Reason and came across an advertisement for a recently commissioned Zogby poll. The question was posed to 1,028 people. They were asked whether they'd be likely to use "hard drugs such as heroin or cocaine" if those substances were legal. The results were not surprising:
Ninety-ninety percent of respondents answered, "No." Only 0.6 percent said "Yes." The remaining 0.4 percent weren't sure.
Here is a position that where my colleagues Why Me and Pirate Eddie will often disagree with me. Regardless, this is an issue that often is never discussed with reason. The belief has often been preached that upon legalization, everyone will be running to their local CVS to stock up on mid-grade opiates. Yes, there are those who have already gotten in their cars. However, most people, as the poll suggests, will consider their environment and choose a reasoned approach.

State passes droopy pants law

Ok, I'll bite. Why is it a matter of the state to regulate behavior? In my copy of the Constitution, I don't see any reference to this right.

I hope that someone takes this to court.

Read my lips, no new nations!
According to a story from the washington times the updated version of the U.S. Army's Field Manual on Operations ( http://www.dtic.mil/doctrine/jel/service_pubs/fm3_0a.pdf ) now considers "stability operations" (chapter 9), which if you read this section it does sound like a fancied up wording for nation building, as a component of U.S. military operations. Hmm I seem to remember somebody saying that nation building is not what the U.S. was about, in fact I think that that someone was criticizing a certain husband of a current presidential hopeful from the Democrat party (I'll give a clue here, I'm not talking about Obama) about policies that had been invoked by this hopeful's husband, who just happened to be President at that time, in the Balkans which were considered to be nation building. Hmmm now who was this again??
